I like to build motorcycles. In this channel I post my building process. The first bike I've built uses a basis of a Yamaha XV 750 Virago. It finally became a Scrambler which I call the 'Chiefpep Scrambler'. Currently I am building another bike which is more of a caféracer. I am from Holland that's why some of my video's are in Dutch. Since I notice I have a lot of international bike building friends I do all my current video's in English. I posted my video's on a weekly basis which takes some time but therefore my video's are kind of step by step video's now.

In this episode you won’t see how I clean the front brake calipers yet, that will be in the third episode, but you do see how I clean and prepare the rear brake callipers. Super goede video.
I like video and think fair. i have two 2011 rt’s Overall a great bike feels good fast enough and handles well. People of all walks come up to admire this bike. They are not perfect but overall are very satisfying to ride and grow on you.
Goeiemorgen, intussen al met de V100 Stelvio gereden?
Nee nog niet! Is het wat?
Interesting video. It's obvious you are not aware of the market in the US. You will not ride a finer touring machine than my Victory Vision. But I am getting old, and my back is pretty much done, so my 900-pound baby has been retired. I now ride a 2017 Triumph Trophy SE, and let me tell you, I will have this bike until I can no longer ride. This bike has speed, agility, velvety smoothness, amazing range, unmatched comfort and a feature set that creates an incredible riding experience. I am not sure why so many riders took the bait of the ADV bike. I totally agree with you that 99% of ADV bikes never see the dirt. And that is fine. People should ride what they want to ride. For me personally I think ADV bikes are hideous and would never own one. Sport touring bikes, or touring bikes as you call them, have always been the bikes I have been drawn too. I think this segment has morphed into something else, and the manufacturers are bringing the Tracers, GSX-GTs, Ninja-SX and so on to the market to represent it. That's fine I suppose, but I still prefer my Trophy.
I’ve been riding GSA’s for ten years and love them. But I tested a new RT last year and was instantly hooked. It will be my next bike. Oh and I’m 58 😂
Fjr is still here
Great!
Old man bike whatever…I’m getting a fjr.
Nice job im just want someone to install a digital display instead but the display would have to be bigger than the original or a sheet of black plastic would have to be used on top as a filler
They're called sport touring to differentiate them from touring cruisers like the goldwing.
If the blinking bothers you turn off the cruise!
Hi sir I’m a big fun with channel… watching from NY and I have a bike Kawasaki kz650 sr that I’m trying to re-wired using a moto gadget any video from ur channel I could watch… thank you and god bless
I don't like moto gadget. Costs a lot of money and basically does nothing special. You still have to connect the wires (like I do without the gadget).
You should read workshop manual . You know nothing. Rear disk as you call it is clutch and front are cut cones. Please stop making wrong info videos! And don't heat elements just to loosen double lock nut. You are terrible.
Hi, what fuel tank did you use on this build?
I kind of forgot... I believe it was a XS 750 or 850
@@chiefpepdesign thanks. What ever happened to the virago do you still have it?
Hi Chief, i know you finished your build 5 years ago, but i was wondering if you can make a 2 min close up of all the vacuum hose and ventilation hoses that connect to the carbs, intake boots, and hoses into the frame of the bike. i see them a little bit in this video but not enough and i am having trouble understanding what i need. I didnt get the bike with all original setup so its hard to put back to stock. I have all the stock carbs and intake boots, but my new petcocks are just single hose fitting petcocks, no vacuum outlet on petcock... If you prefer to speak via Email i can do that. Thank you for all the help, hope you can help this also!
One of the most asked questions. That's why I made a video about that item 😊 ua-cam.com/video/gFNiMe2vnjw/v-deo.htmlsi=tMBsX2MPyfv4c-YJ
@@chiefpepdesign thanks a lot sir!
One question to both of you. After many years of wearing Shoei (GT Air and Neotec II) I went for a change to Schuberth C5, which I regret. (I'm selling it) The question: Are the newly built Neotec II, ECE 20.06 and/or Snell M2020R ? If is sold in USA then is DOT (poor test). Can you extend the info? Thank you. PS: To me Neotec III is not as practical as the Neo II
The Shoei Neotec II is certified under ECE 22.05, which is the European safety standard. - In the United States, it meets DOT (Department of Transportation) standards. The DOT standard is often considered less rigorous than ECE 22.05. - The Neotec III, which is an update from Neotec II, is likely to follow similar certification patterns. It's designed to meet ECE 22.06, which is the updated European standard. However, the availability and certification specifics in different regions, including the USA, may vary and could include DOT certification for the US market. The ECE 22.06 standard is indeed an upgrade and offers more stringent testing compared to ECE 22.05 and DOT standards. However, for the exact certifications of newly built models, you should verify with Shoei. Hope this helps.
@@chiefpepdesign ECE 22.05 is good enough. My doubt is if a new Neo2 from a manufacturing point is already old (NOS) or at least from 2022 when they were discontinued. Thank you
Hi i am interested in buying the same year bmw how much would this cost at a bmw dealership? I am an novice mechanic so i wouldn't attempt it myself.
There are, as far as I know, no 'universal' prices all over the world for bikes or repairs... Best is to go to your local dealership and ask these questions in person.
@@chiefpepdesignthey can get expensive BMW motorcycle in general because of the maintenance intervals correct?
@@rolldog82 correct.
GT bikes are viewed as 'Old Man' bikes and Adventure bikes are seen as more 'aggressive' looking or whatever.. But personally I think adventure bikes are almost universally ugly, and would never buy one. They are also much more of a compromise than a 'built for purpose' touring bike. Like the urban SUV cars, they appeal to people who want to look far more adventurous than they ever end up being! As a VFR800 rider, my eyes are on the Triumph ST1050 for my next bike..🤘
Very nice idea for producing a “blank diagram to draw on.”
@@chiefpepdesign Klopt. Ik kocht eind 2006 een hagelnieuwe GSA1200 (€22000,00). Binnen garantie vervangen: achter schokbreker, 2 voor remschijven, voorwiel, priceas keering!!
Thank you. My relation with BMW is very much like yours. I'm really a Honda guy. But... in November last year I traded in my old ST1100 for a R1150RT. I had to find out what the better touring bike was for me. To me, and I hate to write this, it is the RT. Weather protection is second to none, stability is great (much better than the ST1100). Of course the boxer is no match for the V4 of the ST and the gearbox is very precise yet clunky. Early this year I bought a CBR 600 FSport. Great fun bike, far too fast for me. An opportunity came up to trade in the CBR for a 1150GS. I had promised myself to never ever purchase a GS, they are so f... ugly. However, I did buy this 2003 GS and now the RT is up for sale. I prefer the GS and I now understand why these bikes are so popular. OK, there is almost no weather protection but, to me, that is the only drawback when comparing the GS with the RT. To me it feels like BMW put more effort in designing the GS than they did with the RT. The GS is a near perfect commuter and is also fine on longer road trips. And for real fun there still is a 4th gen VFR in the shed. I love these VFRs more than any other bike.
I totally agree about the prices and the various problems you will encounter. The costs are enormous. For example the fuel pomp of my 1200RT was quite allright after 48000 km, but a plastic hose of the pump broke off. I had to buy a new one a 450 euro. The abs 3 system of my R1150RT failed in France. The remaining breakpower was about 10 % and I drove it 400 km home at night to avoid braking. Repair would cost 1200 euro, a new system 2750 euro. Quite ridiculous. I removed the abs and sold the thing instantly. Still I had almost every type of BMW. When its riding, a BMW is the best bike in the world. The wind protection of every RT is quite perfect and I love the boxer concept. As told in the video, a Japanese od even English bike wil be by far more reliable and less expensive to purchase and repair. BMW really makes you love and hate the bike. The most reliable is the name, not the bike itself.
Exactly that.
This is undoubtedly the best ST review...and I've seen them all by now. Informative, interesting, completely comfortable extemporaneous conversation, as if you're just talking to your best friend. Kudos! Amsterdam is a lovely place and your riding is top notch. Great video.
Wow. What a great compliment! Thank you!
My 1993 ST1100 is still competing.
Leuke informatieve video by the way
Never heard you mention about the Goldwing though.....
I do mention it in this video. Can't remember where. That's also a different type within the touring segment. That's more of a ultra luxery tourer... I try to point out that these bikes (which I point out in this video) all are ending...

That is the most beautiful and simple explanation about motorcycle electric systems ..😂😂🎉😢😮😅
Funny to say the least... I owned a 2006 R1200RT (new) and sold it 4 years later, with 123.000km done with zero problems, yes zero! Maybe because it was always properly served on time at official dealerships bmw, definitely the best by far of the many bikes I've owned before, including japanese, italian, english, etc, and the worse of all... american! I currently own a 2023 R1250RT with 9.000km now, zero issues so far but of course a bit early to take conclusions... just hoping for the same reliability I had so far riding bmw's.
Great to hear! Well done to bring it to the official BMW service centre. They were able to tackle all issues in time so you never would have these. Always a great feeling if you bring the bike to the official dealership! I am really curious of the BMW R 1250...
Before you buy a Neotec 3 check the availability of parts. Can't find a Pinlock insert without buying a visor for £85, and guess what, the Neotec 2 inserts won't fit!!
watching this video while my st1300 is in bits trying to diagnose an electrical fault... somehow prefer the st1100! only problem is they're super old so need more care and maintenance, but still extremely reliable unless neglected. the st1100 seems like a more raw st1300, and I like that 😁
Is the issue that your fuelpump doesn't go on?! If so, I know what do.
I am restoring a 1994 Kawasaki 250 Eliminator. Where do the wires from the stator go to, and does this bike use both a CDI and a Voltage Rectifier?
I'm sorry. I have no idea. If you take the wiring diagram out of the workshop manual you'll see this instantly!
You can buy a 2023 or 2024 FJR today. Still make and sell them.
No. These are 'overstock'. They don't produce them anymore.
Thanx for a great video 👍 A question - where do you order parts for a virago?

Great work. Great information for any motor biker. Thank you for this valuable knowledge.
Funny it was a bit of a fiddle but I fitted my Cardo 4x comms to my neotec 3 along with the pin loc with no prob I think I had to make a little cut in the plastic surround to allow connections from the cardo unit to fit into phone, mike cables
lots of love! but too much black on black on black 😉
Muito bom trabalho
Love my ST❤
I've owned the same model as this for 5 years, I ride it all year and do my own maintenance, other than normal service items, the only issues I've had was left hand switch gear failure, the switches use a flexible circuit board and it cracks and the switches stop working, also not cheap to buy and new pistons in the rear calliper, not too bad and probably due to salt and water after years of winter riding. The engine is ok, but runs out of puff at top end, (I test rode a 1250RT and that has the grunt all the way to the top end) but has the torque to overtake at normal road speeds. I love the handling, its surprisingly good on the back roads, but will eat motorway miles. As you said maintenance is easy, I love the fact that you need one size Torx key to remove all the body work and once done its all easy to get to, very different from my VFR800, which had various screws and clips to get parts of the bodywork off or my friends ST1300 which is a lovely bike, but its also had its issues, with the electric screen adjustment failing, which seems to be a known problem and the clutch slave cylinder needing replacing, a job which the Honda dealer says is engine out, but he managed to do it without going that far.
Leuke review!
Where do you get that special tool ?
I Googled it.
I have the 2013 model with only 31k and it's very different from the ST1100/1300 I had before. The 4 cylinders are more smooth but apart that the RT is hands down better in any way. 50kg lighter, lower center of gravity, more torque, better handling, better comfort, better protection. no heat burning your leg even in hot summer (very important point for me) much much faster in the twisty roads of swiss Alps (you have to force to keep the curves with ST the RT turn by herself and you can break later and stronger less weight). No reliability issue for the moment and I made all services by myself very esay to work. Honda is very reliable I had 5 Honda before despite I had ABS failure with the ST1100
Very enlightening video, I think you have hit the nail on the head in that it does n't have to be the latest and greatest bike to satisfy what motorcyclists want, i.e. reliability, comfort, practicality, and good build quality - as you say the Japanese do it well!!!. I have recently found a 2006 ST1300P -A, ex-police bike with only 12,000klms on it, so I am going to join the club and buy it. As a motorcyclist for the last 55 years I love bikes and I think the "low" tech ST1300 is perfect, won't ask me too many questions. Love the V4, great grunt, and super smooth, and bullet proof it you take care of it. I have a daily commuter, Honda Integra DCT, great little bike and I will keep it for the daily commute but any longer journeys will see the ST1300 get to stretch it's legs. Thank you again and please keep the videos coming Chiefpep.
Why do you prefere your bike to do those dangerous nosedives on breaking? If you had a R1200 GS before it has the same telelever suspension right? Soes it behave differently? I'm currently I'm looking for BMW's exactly because of this feature. Is it bad a bad feature?
Yes indeed. The same. But I just notice it now more than before since my last bikes were: V85, ST 1300, Burgman 650, Tenere 650. All those just acted like 'normal bikes'. I am convinced I will get used to it, I just noticed it instantly.
Edit
